Job Description Summary
The Art Therapist confers with the rehabilitation team to develop and implement art therapy interventions and services. The Art Therapist coordinates and facilitates art therapy services that support patient recovery during inpatient hospitalization.

The Art Therapist budgets program funds and is responsible for inventory, storage, and replacement of equipment and supplies.

The Art Therapist works with the Advancement Team for fund raising events.

Job Description

The Art Therapist:

  • Coordinates and implements art therapy services that support patient recovery.
  • Facilitates group and individual art therapy sessions that enhance adjustment to hospitalization and changes in physical and cognitive functioning.
  • Documents and reports therapeutic progress.
  • Budget program funds and manage art supplies inventory and storage, which may involve working with vendors, evaluating products, and recommending acquisition of supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates art related events and projects within organization.
  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships
  • Reports directly to the Manager, Therapeutic Recreation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of art therapy at a level normally acquired through completion of a master's degree in Art Therapy from an accredited college.
  • ATR-certification and LPC licensure; ATR/ATR-BC and LCPC preferred.
  • Preferably 2 years post graduate art therapy and/or counseling professional experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the growth and development of child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and caregivers, with physicians and treatment team members.
  • Provides collaborative interdisciplinary treatment services with other treatment team members.
  • Provides educational workshops.
  • Facilitate safe and effective art therapy interventions for patients with a diverse range of cognitive and physical functioning.
  • Observes, evaluates, and documents the impact and effectiveness of art therapy interventions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of adaptive art tools and materials to provide effective art therapy intervention.
  • Knowledge and skills related to planning, organizing and exhibiting patient artist art work.
  • Knowledge and skills related to planning and organizing fundraising events.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide referrals and resources for continued outpatient art therapy services.
  • Able to maintain knowledge of current professional standards and practices by reading appropriate professional literature, attending meetings, workshops, and in-service education programs.
  • Able to independently maintain professional certification and licensure by completing required continuing education units, necessary examinations, and paying required renewal fees.
Working Conditions
  • Normal patient care environment with little or no exposure to dust, noise or extreme temperature.
  • Evening and weekend flexibility required.
