Job Summary

The Assistant Director is responsible for managing core areas related to Residence Life personal misconduct cases that are brought to the attention of Residence Life and the Office of Student Conduct (OSC). This includes but is not limited to:

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides supervision to 3 full-time and part-time graduate student staff members.
  • Hears and adjudicates high level, complex cases that include the possible removal of a student from the institution, from their housing, or from their organization while determining the urgency of each case in consultation.
  • Provides case management oversight for care and conduct cases.
  • Understands and articulates policies and procedures as stated in the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct, IU Housing Rules and Regulations and the associated policies and procedures for Bloomington Campus.
  • Serves as an investigator and hearing officer for informal and formal processes related to personal misconduct.
  • Provides alternative resolutions to students seeking conflict resolution through mediation or restorative justice.
  • Plans and participates in training for full time staff and graduate student staff.
  • Advises 1 student conduct board.
  • Consults with other hearing officers and hearing boards on cases.
  • Manages case files, database information, and documentation related to investigations.
  • Develops and maintains a training module for professional staff, student staff, and other departments as OSC deems appropriate.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with campus partners, other departments, and stakeholders.
  • Provides training and presentations to appropriate campus offices and academic departments regarding policy, procedures, student behaviors and reporting obligations.
  • Works collaboratively with students, and staff to assess current issues and concerns within the University community regarding conflict resolution and develop and administer programs/workshops to address them.
  • Utilizes current technologies and information management tools, demonstrating creativity in service delivery to benefit students and improve organizational effectiveness
  • Investigates, manages, monitors, consults on, adjudicates and/or resolves cases of alleged, personal misconduct-related incidents by students utilizing processes articulated in the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities and IU Housing Rules and Regulations, and other related policies and procedures.
  • Reviews complaints, conduct intake meetings, interview involved parties, and facilitate conflict resolution, either through informal or formal mechanisms.
  • Provides guidance in working with student behavioral issues, but this position also requires the ability to be assigned a case and to determine the best course of action for resolution
  • Works with highly sensitive, protected information with discretion and good judgment to maintain student confidentiality, while attending to institutional risk-management concerns.
  • Interacts, as appropriate, with parents and attorneys hired on behalf of students regarding specific student conduct cases.
  • Provides appropriate referrals for students to other offices or agencies when assistance needed is beyond scope of responsibility
  • Leads and serves on committees and task forces within the unit and represent the unit on Division-level or other committees, as requested.
  • Responsible for maintaining overall case distribution, follow up with critical case matters, ensuring files are complete to adhere to Clery Act requirements, and providing educational outreach to staff.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the field of student conduct through professional development activities, including participation in listservs, conferences, and training sessions. Builds relationships with colleagues at peer institutions, review current literature and research, and engage with local, regional, or national professional associations and organizations.
  • Will assist the Associate Director with outreach and education on student life topics related to personal misconduct; assist with assessment and other related projects as assigned.
General Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives that offer support for students facing student conduct allegations, which may also have legal implications with local or campus police.
  • Manages an individual caseload for incidents on and off campus that may affect student standing in relation to the student code of conduct, student safety and well-being, and/or university policies. Handles incident documentation, discovery, adjudication, and sanctions/action planning.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department, other departments, external entities as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student conduct goals, often coordinating sanctions and action planning efforts for individual cases.
  • Interfaces directly with students throughout the duration of the case, directing them to university resources such as staff in student support roles as appropriate. Places an emphasis on confidentiality of student concerns, university policy compliance, and a culture of care within all direct student interactions.
  • Provides training to and serve as a resource for university constituents with high student interaction to educate on student conduct and the related procedures for case resolution.
  • Run reports on case progress, types of code violations, and sanction/action plan completion, reporting trends to the manager.
  • Performs frequent research and maintains knowledge of relevant university policies, the code of conduct, relevant laws and ordinances, and best practice procedures for handling student conduct issues.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in public affairs, social work, counseling, public health, education, business, or related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in student conduct, higher education, or related field
Preferred
  • 2 years of supervisory experience
  • 3 years of professional-level experience in adjudicating cases, conducting investigations, or student conflict resolution, or direct student conduct work in higher education
  • Knowledge of applicable Civil Rights laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of student conflict resolution, residential life, student conduct, or a related field within student affairs

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$70,000 - $72,000 annually

Work Hours

Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with occasional work on nights and weekends.
