Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Attending Veterinarian - Boca Raton, FL.

Position Summary:

Maintain overall responsibility for the veterinary care and animal husbandry program of vertebrate animals at Florida Atlantic University. Provide direct and indirect consultation and support regarding the health and welfare of animals while ensuring compliance with USDA standards and the Animal Welfare Act, The Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals, NIH Public Health Service Policy (OLAW), FDA regulations, DEA Regulations, AAALAC guidelines, and state and county rules and regulations. Utilize demonstrated experience in animal research and display an understanding of research methodology, principles, and procedures.

Responsiblities:

  • Responsible for ensuring that proper veterinary care and husbandry are provided for all vertebrate animals within the University's central and satellite facilities, with an emphasis on laboratory mice and rats in research and teaching. Oversee and assist with research using species such as wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles, turtles, and fish in field studies and captive settings.

  • Help to ensure Florida Atlantic University's program of veterinary care remains in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and meets AAALAC accreditation standards. Utilize experience with laboratory animal programs and management of such.

  • Conduct clinical rounds on a routine basis to monitor animal health and status. Provide clinical veterinary care. Perform clinical and surgical procedures and necropsies. Supervise, monitor, and/or perform surgery, administer anesthesia, and pre- and post-operative care.

  • Review vendor health records, animal orders, assist with imports/exports of lab animals. Participate in Semi-Annual inspections and USDA inspections. Perform Post Approval Monitoring (PAM) of animal research protocols. Maintain appropriate clinical records of specific procedures and animal health (USDA and Non-USDA).

  • Develop and monitor animal-related research activities, animal health surveillance programs and quarantine programs. Maintain familiarity with trends, issues, and advances in strategic and program planning through periodic review of relevant journals or other literature. Identify and actively pursue a planned program of professional growth through continuing education, etc.

  • Assist and advise researchers in humane and proper experimental design and conduct as it relates to animal welfare and veterinary issues. Assist researchers with protocol development and execution. Conduct veterinary pre-reviews of protocols for IACUC and germane IBC protocols.

  • Provide formal and informal training and consultation for faculty, staff, and students on methods of laboratory animal surgery, aseptic technique, pre-and post-op care, pain management, and euthanasia. Assist with additional training and techniques as needed to meet the needs of PHS Policy, FAU's IACUC, AAALAC accreditation standards, and University policies.

  • Serve as a voting member of the FAU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), evaluating animal use protocols and amendments, providing guidance and support to committees, principal investigators, and biosafety personnel, and advising University leadership about issues and policies pertaining to animal care and use. Contribute to SOP development and implementation.

  • Assist faculty and staff in resolving problems and achieving compliance with research activities.

  • Attend relevant/selected national or regional meeting(s) for continuing education/training and meeting with colleagues.

  • Maintain knowledge of federal and state laws. Maintain current knowledge of issues in laboratory animal medicine, animal care, and science. Participate in site visits/audits by external oversight organizations (AAALAC International, USDA, OLAW, and DEA).

  • Correspond as necessary with federal and state officials and consult IACUC concerning University policies and procedures. Be available for federally required internal inspections (e.g., IACUC semi-annual inspections) and external inspections (e.g., USDA inspections) of animal facilities and program reviews.

  • Work with the University's Institutional Official (IO), Research Integrity (RI) Unit, IACUC, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), and IBC to communicate with the community about biomedical and wildlife research at the University.

  • Responsible for the emergency operations and contingency plan for FAU's animal care and use program. Participate in the crisis management team and disaster planning meetings.

  • Participate in coordination with facilities department regarding all vivaria and satellite facilities housing animals as well as procedural space for research animals.

  • Be available for on-call (off-hours, nights, weekends, and holidays).

  • Maintain a customer service orientation, be attentive to others, respond appropriately, answer questions, and/or provide needed information within reasonable time frames. Make sound judgments based on gathering and analyzing factual and objective data. Interpret policies and procedures in order to make sound independent decisions. Demonstrate alertness and adaptability to dynamic working conditions.

  • Make decisions in a timely manner. Offer suggestions for positive changes. Readily accept new responsibilities and assignments. Recognize when help might be needed by others, and proactively offer guidance and assistance. Listen to researchers and provide constructive advice. Willingness to work collegially with other veterinarians and technical staff involved in the animal program.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested within the scope of knowledge and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications:Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited institution required.

Florida State License in Veterinary Medicine in good standing; or state licensure in a minimum of one other state and the ability to obtain a Florida State License within one year of appointment required.

ACLAM Board Certification or residency training in laboratory animal medicine with eligibility to take the ACLAM board exam required.

Ability to obtain federal and state DEA license required.

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to a growing university research program required.

Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills required.

Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills required.

Demonstrated experience working as a veterinarian in an institutional/academic/industry setting in laboratory animal medicine required.

Demonstrated knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment (including demonstrated knowledge of and experience with PHS Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals) required.

Demonstrated experience interacting with an IACUC and IBC committee required.

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team required.

Demonstrated supervisory experience required.

Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations required.





Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with AAALAC standards.
