CONTROLS ENGINEER

SUMMARY
The Controls Engineer is responsible for the engineering and design of control systems for of Makino automated machining cells. The automated cells typically include control based equipment for the automated servicing of Makino machining centers. Engineering of the control systems includes the control hardware system design and the programming of programmable logic controllers (PLC) that are utilized to control the functionality of the cell automation. Application development of human machine interfaces (HMI) that provide the cell automation interface for operations and maintenance personnel is required. Setup and programming of the robots that service the machining centers is a requirement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Knowledge and Capabilities

  • Develops detailed specifications regarding the requirements of the automated machining cells and systems.
  • Performs all Controls Engineering functions including conceptual design, layout design, detail design, and design certification for control systems.
  • Creates control systems schematics and drawings to support the construction, implementation and maintenance of the automation control systems.
  • Effectively program, implement and test PLC and HMI programs for automated machining cells.
  • Effectively program, implement, and test robot programs and teach the robots during system startup.
  • Work with 3rd party suppliers of equipment that will be integrated into the Makino automated machining cells.
  • Find solutions to obstacles and work closely within the Makino engineering groups and with 3rd party suppliers to overcome issues during the design and implementation phases of a an automated project.
Technical Liaison
  • Is a technical liaison to the Project Manager, Application Engineering Team Leader, Manufacturing personnel, and customer base.
  • Responsible for all engineered requirements from concept to installation and run off. This includes all engineering, purchasing and assembly of components, sub-assemblies and all related details. The Controls Engineer has responsibility for recommendations of technological enhancements.
  • Interface with other departments within the Company including Sales, Option Engineering, Applications Engineering, Order Administration, Field Service, and Manufacturing.
  • Interface with customers and Suppliers during the course of projects.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to develop and troubleshoot software for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs).
  • Ability to develop control schematics in AutoCAD.
  • Ability to program robotic automation for manufacturing applications.
  • Able to utilize MS Office products such as Word, Excel, etc.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to travel (up to 50%).
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • 4 years of technical education (Bachelor's Degree) with an emphasis on, Industrial Automation or Electrical Engineering.
