Chief Objective of Position:

Christopher Newport University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business. The dean reports directly to the University's Provost and Executive Vice President, Dr. Quentin Kidd. The successful candidate should have the ability and interest to develop, articulate, and execute a shared vision for the school. The dean should have a strong commitment to supporting the educational mission of the University, with high standards in teaching, research, and service, as well as having the skillsets to serve as the chief spokesperson and advocate for the Luter School of Business both within and outside of the University.

Work Tasks:

The Dean is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the Luter School of Business, including managing administrative staff and processes, exercising prudence and foresight to establish and administer the budgets of the School, working closely with the Provost Office, maintaining the commitment to the School's AACSB accreditation and ensure compliance with the accreditation standards, and maintaining and furthering developing an inclusive environment within the School.

The next dean should have professional experiences and qualifications that align with the responsibilities of the role:

Fundraising and External Relations

  • Responsible for managing and promoting the external visibility of the School to all relevant constituencies, including the building and maintenance of relationships with donors recruiters, media, other educational and business organizations, and alumni
  • Responsible for articulating the development needs and goals of the School and work with University Advancement to realize those needs and goals
  • Assist in the School's fundraising efforts and donor relations
  • Represent the School at events, public engagements, and conferences

Leadership and Strategic Planning
  • Oversee the development and implementation of goals
  • Provide vision, management and direction for the purpose of leading the Luter School of Business, including the disciplines of Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Financial Analysis
  • Develop and lead the initiatives which will enhance the School's reputation

Academic Responsibilities
  • Oversee the relevance and quality of the curriculum
  • Facilitate and approve the schedule of classes, working collaboratively with the Assistant Dean and Chairs
  • Maintain a commitment to the principles and aims of a public regional liberal arts university
  • Foster a vision of cross-disciplinary connections and integration within the School, as well as within the broader University
  • Foster a vision of community engagement and community engaged learning via internship opportunities for students and engagement opportunities for faculty
  • Embrace the University's aspiration to become a preeminent regional university and be able to work collegially and in concert with the President, the Provost, and other members of the administrative staff, and the Faculty in exercising exceptional leadership to fulfill the University's commitments

Faculty Relations and Development
  • Working closely with the Provost and the Director of Faculty Recruitment, recruit and hire a diverse community of faculty and staff for the School
  • Promote an inclusive environment to retain faculty and staff
  • Evaluate faculty in the School for the purposes of reappointment and tenure, the Annual Review, and Post-Tenure Review
  • Promote faculty development and scholarship and mentor faculty in maintaining and developing intellectually rigorous and innovative academic programs, including Honors, service learning, international education, and undergraduate research
  • Cultivate existing and new relationships in order to successfully support and develop resources for student scholarship and for faculty development programs
  • Facilitate applications and programs that support the work of the School and University

Student Engagement and Support
  • Assist with admission efforts of the University to recruit a diverse body of students of high ability and assist with the retention efforts of the University to graduate students on schedule with successful educational experiences
  • Addresses student concerns and issues, thereby contributing to a supportive learning environment
  • Promote an inclusive environment for students
  • Oversee the development of the School's student services and career support programs

General
  • Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the "Students First" value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service
  • This position is designated as a "responsible employee" who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty
  • Safety issues are reviewed and communicated and goals are set to ensure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absences

Required Education:

Must hold an advanced degree, preferably in business or a closely related field.

Experience Required:

In addition to the work tasks listed above, must have either held a position at the level of Dean, Associate Dean, or Department Chair, or a distinguished position of leadership in the public or private sector and are ready and able to assume a challenging academic career focusing on college administration.
