Position Summary:

The Director of Post-baccalaureate Programs and Community Engagement is responsible for running the UNC Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), delivering science outreach content to the State, and advising student groups within the School of Medicine (SOM) basic science community. The Director reports to the Director of Career Development & Outreach. The Director is responsible for developing and directing all aspects of the UNC PREP for 9-12 scholars housed in the Office of Graduate Education (OGE). The Director independently implements a comprehensive research and skills development program to prepare the PREP scholars for entry and success in top Biomedical PhD programs. The Director designs, develops and implements curricula for the PREP scholars and collects, analyzes, and publishes data on program effectiveness for a national audience. The position also includes grant writing and reporting to the National Institutes of Health to maintain financial support of the program. In collaboration with other Directors in OGE, this individual develops and strengthens collaborations with universities within North Carolina and elsewhere. The Director chairs the PREP advisory board, leads peer mentoring for the PREP scholars, and attends national meetings with other Directors and Deans who lead programs funded through the National Institutes of Health Training and Workforce Development programs. The Director will work with the Director of Scientific Outreach to co-direct science outreach initiatives that benefit K-12 students and the general public especially NC DNA Day, the flagship science outreach event of the OGE. The Director oversees and advises student affinity groups that are part of the Office of Graduate Education. These inclusive student-led groups are integral to student belonging, success, wellness, community building, and professional development. The Director trains student leaders and facilitates leadership transfers within affinity groups as leaders graduate.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Demonstrated ability to create and implement inclusive professional development activities. Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, coordinate multiple deadlines simultaneously, and delegate responsibilities. Experience in organizing and leading scientific and career development events and mentoring science trainees to achieve scientific and career goals.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Experience in developing and implementing training programs and workshops required in a higher learning environment. Experience in representing, teaching and mentoring a wide range of learners required. Grant experience and excellent oral and written communication skills preferred. Deep understanding of biomedical PhD training and graduate admissions practices and experience at the post-doctoral level is strongly preferred. Program management including budgeting and federal grant proposal preparation experience is preferred. Must be able to interact effectively with students, faculty, and administrators using excellent written and oral communication skills.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
