The University of Miami Health System, "UHealth", Department of Pediatrics-Administration has an exciting opportunity for a Full-Time Director, Sponsored Programs to work in Miami.

As a member of the department's executive leadership team, the Director, Sponsored Programs guides and oversees externally funded programs for the University, such as research programs and scholarship programs. Additionally, the Director, Sponsored Programs supervises the administrative activities of the relevant programs, including identifying funding sources, acquiring funding, setting program policies and objectives, and allocating resources.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the post-award administration of all sponsored programs for the University.
  • Develops and maintains the post-award database for sponsored programs.
  • Monitors, keeps current with, interprets, and directs proper application of government and other external funding organizations' rules and regulations.
  • Interacts with various university departments for system implementation design, and planning.
  • Participates in the University's fiscal year-end tasks and other mandated year-end requirements.
  • Hires, mentors, and trains staff, and conducts performance evaluations and corrective actions.
  • Provides advice to leadership and staff regarding sensitive, critical, and highly complex issues, and interprets a broad range of sponsor policies and government regulations.
  • Supervises staff review of grant and contract award terms and negotiation of sensitive and complex sponsored programs issues and awards.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Department Specific Functions:

Operations and Administrative Management
  • Oversees research operations, including supervision and performance management of all assigned staff including making decisions as they pertain to hiring, training, evaluation, promotion, and termination.
  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Improves and identifies opportunities to improve operational systems, processes, and policies.
  • Seeks problem resolution and ensures that the solution is within the established departmental/division guidelines.
  • Participates on various university research councils, committees and/or research organizations.
  • Orchestrates proactive problem-solving for time sensitive issues.

Grants Management
  • Serve as integral partner in submitting proposals to extramural sponsors for research, clinical trials, training, instructional and other sponsored activities.
  • Ensures timely processing of departmental/grant contractual/service/consultant agreements.
  • Development of new policies and procedures to ensure the efficient operation of the divisions, routinely evaluating current policies to continually improve operations, identifying synergies within and outside the department.
  • Develops high-level sponsored reports, which summarizes research activity within the department over time. These reports include but are not limited to pending grants, grant submissions, and awards (Federal, State, and Private) by division and/or principal investigator.
  • Ensures that Investigators are following Federal, NIH, and sponsoring agencies, and enforces compliance with these policies by providing relevant information to investigators and review of the status of their respective projects.
  • Prepares and distributes reports demonstrating grant spending including run rates and unexpended/unencumbered amounts assuring that investigators are appropriately using extramural funding before startup funding.
  • Oversees departmental clinical trial accounting activity and partners with Director Research Support to ensure that clinical research coordinators are following best practices for clinical trial management and external funding is maximized to cover effort support.
  • Ensures that effort certification reports and effort grant reporting are accurately and timely submitted to Research Administration; assists investigators and research staff in certifying the sponsored effort correctly on a quarterly basis.
  • Acts as a liaison with the assigned university representative from the Office of Research Administration, ensuring report integrity, budgeting, and accounting integration.
  • Provides financial analyses, feasibility studies, and others to translate strategic plan into quantifiable data and analysis.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • Minimum 8 years of experience preferably in Research Administration.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
