Job Description Summary:
The Identity Engineering team is responsible for providing Identity & Access Management capabilities for PayPal users and partners. We design, develop, and enhance services that are used across every interaction between PayPal and its users and partners. Our solutions must scale across billions of such interactions, working with petabyte plus data, integrating with various other APIs in real-time and providing high availability and configurability to the business. To achieve this, we are always looking at advances in technology and science and tying those back to business needs.

As a Distinguished Platform Architect of the Identity Engineering team, you will be a leading voice for Identity and resourceful to stakeholders throughout the organization. This role requires a strategic thinker who can drive innovation while ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical depth, leadership experience, and business acumen, with a strong focus on customer-centric product development.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architectural Leadership: Develop and execute the architectural strategy for PayPal's Identity platforms, aligning with enterprise-level goals and ensuring the delivery of secure, scalable, and high-performing systems.

  • Industry Engagement: Represent PayPal in key industry standards organizations (e.g., OpenID Foundation, IETF, FIDO Alliance, W3C), contributing to the evolution of identity management protocols such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and SCIM.

  • Technical Excellence: Lead core engineering functions, including code reviews, design proposals, code standards, testing strategies, and release processes, ensuring high-quality code delivery.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Business teams to align on vision, drive technical roadmaps, and ensure teams are equipped to execute strategic priorities.

  • Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including executives and senior leadership, to drive alignment between business and technical objectives.

  • Innovation & Vision: Stay ahead of industry trends and think creatively about integrating identity solutions within PayPal's broader ecosystem to improve customer experience and enhance security.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: 15-20 years of experience leading the engineering vision behind large-scale, customer-focused products, with a proven track record in identity management technologies and protocols.

  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of application design, architecture, and development, with related experience in network, security, infrastructure, and data architectures. Expert in identity standards (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SCIM).Software Development: Proficient in large-scale software development, distributed architectures, and service-oriented or microservice architectures. Strong experience with web services (REST, SOAP), HTTP, and API design.

  • Development Best Practices: Strong object-oriented programming (OOP) skills, with experience using design patterns (e.g., MVC, Spring), SQL, and modern database technologies (NoSQL, Oracle). Competent in software engineering tools and practices, including unit testing, test automation, and continuous integration.

  • Leadership & Communication: Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence technical decision-making at the executive level and represent PayPal as a thought leader within the broader software development community.

  • Holistic Decision-Making: A strong orientation toward decisions that benefit the entire organization, balancing resource optimization with long-term value creation.
