The Role
Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
The SSN(X) Platform Components team is looking for a technically strong and motivated engineer with shipbuilding experience and a good understanding in ship systems to support the development of the next generation fast attack submarine. This is an exciting, once in a generation opportunity to get in at the beginning of an innovative and novel submarine design. You will join a diverse multidisciplinary team of engineers coordinating with the Navy and industry to influence the critical functions and capabilities of what will become the world's most advanced and capable submarine.
The platform components team is responsible for supporting the concept design and development of shipboard components including those within platform mechanical system systems such as chill water, variable ballast, hydraulics and high pressure air. The candidate will be expected to act as a technical lead supporting the components and distributed system teams and coordination among disciplines. In this role they will be responsible for supporting system research and development, developing and understanding system requirements, researching and coordinating with vendors, cooperating with Navy counterparts, producing technical reports and supporting periodic briefs to the Navy.
The ideal candidate may have a systems, mechanical, test, electrical or other related engineering background, but will have a good background of working within ship systems, technical experience, a knowledge of NNS sourcing and a history of working with vendors and the Navy. They will be able to work well across disciplines and be innovative, developing creative solutions to challenging design goals. They will have strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
The position will require periodic travel to vendors, naval bases and facilities, ship visits, other NNS facilities or conferences.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
• Knowledge of submarine mechanical systems and have a good understanding of the different disciplines.
• Understanding of an array of platform components such as pumps and valves, the high pressure air compressor and air conditioning unit.
• Experience in traditional and computer based methodologies for the design and analysis of components.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal to support the development and presentation of technical reports, briefs to NNS leadership and NAVSEA, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners.
•Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus.
