Description:
We are seeking a highly motivated, proactive, professional laboratory animal veterinarian to join our academic group at the University of Pennsylvania. This position will ensure expert veterinary care and welfare support to the research animal community at the University of Pennsylvania. As a faculty member of the Department of Pathobiology at the School of Veterinary Medicine, the successful candidate will contribute to training of veterinary students, externs and residents in the Division of Comparative Medicine & Research (DCM&R) within the Department. The successful candidate will join University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR), which includes a team of 9 exemplary veterinary specialists (ACLAM and ACVP) and more than 15 veterinary technicians, along with ~220 staff members that support business, operations, training and diagnostic services for animal patients at the University.  ULAR provides care for a daily population of more than 150,000 animals belonging to 6 academic Schools across the Philadelphia campus and at New Bolton Center. In addition to a daily census of 45,000 mouse cages and 1,000 rat cages, other species for which ULAR has oversight include nonhuman primates, sheep, swine, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, shrews, fish, frogs, and birds.The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting clinical veterinary care of research animals, animal protocol and amendment reviews as an IACUC member, investigator training and consultation, and other duties to ensure compliance with accrediting and regulatory organizations. They will play a critical role on the veterinary team, working to effectively consult on animal models, developing veterinary care guidance and policies, and assisting with procedures and surgeries in a wide variety of species. Ideally the candidate should have extensive experience in regulatory aspects of external annual reporting, compliance support for protocols and years of IACUC service, particularly related to USDA-covered species. On-call coverage will be shared with the cadre of veterinarians and residents on a rotational basis.To fulfill the academic faculty role, this individual will help with teaching the specialty of comparative animal medicine to our DCM&R Residents through both didactic and one-on-one mentorship during the 3-year training program. In this role, the candidate will serve as a lecturer in courses related to biology and diseases of major animal species used in research. Additional research and academic duties will include mentoring professional veterinary and graduate students in specialized rotations, investigating areas of refinement in laboratory animal science and presenting educational outcomes and cases to veterinary groups within and beyond Penn. Salary, compensation, and rank of faculty appointment will be commensurate with prior experience.
Qualifications:
 DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college or ECFVG/PAVE foreign equivalency certification.ACLAM board certification.Active veterinary license in at least one U.S. state; must be eligible to acquire a Pennsylvania (PA) veterinary license if not already licensed and USDA certification in PA.Must be eligible for DEA controlled substances registration.At least 7 years of recent and relevant experience working as a clinical veterinarian in a research animal program or 4 years past completion of a laboratory animal residency. Experience with and interest in medical care and surgical support of a wide range of animal species is required.Current and relevant working knowledge of animal research regulations and guidelines and experience in assembling annual regulatory reports and compliance reviews.Evidence of collaborative and independent research efforts.Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a dynamic team environment; excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills.Proficiency in computer software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
