Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Kathrine R. Everett Law Library supports the education of Carolina Law students, acts as a research partner with faculty and students, and serves the legal information needs of University students and faculty, the legal community, and the residents of North Carolina. To that end, the Law Library's mission is:
1. To research, develop and implement innovative services, instruction and creative uses of technology to access, manage and communicate knowledge;
2. To collect, organize and preserve legal resources, and provide access to information to enhance and support legal and law related research and scholarship;
3. To teach formal courses in law, legal research and law related subjects in the Law School and the University;
4. To maintain a physical environment conducive to study, research and scholarship; and
5. To foster research, scholarship, education, and leadership in law librarianship, legal research, law, and information and library science.

Position Summary:

The Head of Access Services leads the Access Services department, including access to library spaces, circulation of library resources, borrowing and lending services, and stack maintenance. The Head of Access Services supervises two full-time staff members and leads the department in hiring, training, scheduling and supervising student workers. The Head of Access Services oversees all circulation desk operations, ensuring efficient and high-quality service from both staff and student workers. The Head of Access Services oversees the use of automated delivery systems, stays informed about current trends and technologies, and ensures effective management of borrowing and lending operations. The Head of Access Services directs the maintenance of library stacks, including shifting, weeding, serials updates, and managing reserve room collections. The Head of Access Services develops strategies to enhance patron satisfaction, drafts and updates departmental policies and procedures, and addresses issues related to library access and patron needs. The Head of Access Services updates library hours, coordinates the use of library spaces with other law school departments, and manages security operations for the library space. The Head of Access Services is responsible for providing annual department statistics to meet reporting requirements and creating an Annual Report for the department. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Public Services and collaborates with the Assistant Director of Collection and Technology Services.

This appointment is governed by the Law Librarian Ranking Plan, which provides terms for multi-year contracts, reappointments, and promotions. Librarians, like all library staff, have leadership responsibilities. Leadership for librarians includes activities such as contributing to goals and strategic library directions through active participation on committees, teams, and task forces, and sharing expertise throughout the library in order to further library and university missions. Librarians participate in other department, library, university, and professional activities, as appropriate.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires the Masters in Library Science (MLS) degree (or foreign degree equivalent). In specialized libraries, may substitute an advanced degree in the field of specialization (e.g., legal degree for a law library, or a history degree for a special historical collection within the library setting).

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Master's Degree in Library or Information Science from an A.L.A.-accredited library or information school. All required degrees must be conferred prior to first day of employment.

Library, circulation, and interlibrary loan experience; consultative management style; ability to interact positively with students, staff, faculty, and the public; excellent oral and written communication skills; commitment to collegiality and service; and demonstrated commitment to the law library profession through active engagement in library associations and/or publications. Demonstrated and effective problem-solving skills. Proven capability for managing a variety of tasks and multiple priorities. Strong service orientation and awareness of end-user needs as related to circulation and interlibrary loan policies and procedures. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Minimum five years of library, circulation, and interlibrary loan experience
Supervisory experience in an academic law library, preferably in circulation and/or interlibrary loan.
Experience working at an academic library customer service point.
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse community of faculty, staff, students, and other patrons.
Experience creating policies; assessing and improving workflows.
Demonstrated ability to work with new software and technologies.
Experience providing training or developing training-related documentation.
Knowledge of law library circulation, interlibrary loan, and stacks functions and processes.
Demonstrated ability to create, interpret, and ensure compliance with policies.
Experience with data collection, analysis, and reporting.
