This position offers the opportunity to work closely with our experienced engineers, building your skills in managing and maintaining secure, efficient systems that support our dynamic campus and healthcare environments.This is a hybrid-eligible position.ResponsibilitiesAs a Hosting Services Operations Engineer, you will:
Support Compute and Storage Infrastructure: Assist in monitoring the private cloud environment, helping to ensure system performance and availability.Maintain Virtualization Platforms: Support and troubleshoot virtualized environments, with guidance from senior engineers.Assist in Automation: Participate in developing automated workflows for infrastructure operations using tools such as VMware.Maintain System Stability: Assist in monitoring system stability, responding to incidents, and ensuring minimal disruptions.Assist with Cloud Account Management: Support the configuration and management of cloud accounts, policies, and settings across platforms like AWS, GCP, and Azure to help maintain optimal performance, security, and cost-effectiveness.Support Security and Compliance Efforts: Work within established guidelines to ensure data security and compliance across various systems.Optimize Resources: Assist in monitoring and analyzing resource usage, identifying potential improvements in compute and storage efficiency.Document Processes: Help document infrastructure procedures for team reference and knowledge sharing.Contribute to Cloud Financial Operations (FinOps): Implement FinOps best practices under guidance to help optimize cloud spending, including tasks like rightsizing, workload management, and anomaly detection.Assist in Incident Response: Collaborate with IT staff to support incident response, disaster recovery, and business continuity efforts.
You will also:
Assist and contribute to the installation, and maintenance of operating systems, utilities, and software on computing systems.Follow established protocols to assist in maintaining system security.Collaborate with other IT teams to confirm strategies, assess the technical feasibility of initiatives, and ensure system compatibility within the university's framework.Assist with capacity planning for system configurations, software services, network services, and load distribution.
RequirementsTo be successful in this role, you should have:
Security and Compliance Knowledge: Understanding of data security standards and regulatory frameworks, such as HIPAA.Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic understanding of operating systems, ideally with some experience in system configuration or administration. Experience managing compute and storage infrastructure in a mission-critical private cloud environment;Working knowledge of traditional and blade-based computing hardware, storage management, storage networking, data center networking, power systems including DC.Vendor Platforms: VMware and other hypervisors/container management, Cisco UCS & FI, Pure Storage, Cisco and Juniper networkingFamiliarity with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) or willingness to learn.Exposure to virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware) and basic troubleshooting skills.General knowledge of data security practices.Ability to work collaboratively and independently when appropriate.Strong communication skills to work effectively with colleagues and users.
The expected pay range for this position is $122,024 - $147,076 per annum.Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
