Job Description
Scope of Position: The Ohio State University is committed to enhancing the quality of care provided to patients. The Department of Clinical Epidemiology develops policies and procedures that are designed to prevent infections in patients, visitors and staff. The Infection Preventionist assures that these policies and procedures follow applicable guidelines and regulations and are communicated and followed. The Infection Preventionist evaluates the healthcare environment, the quality of patient care and patient outcomes for risk of infection and makes recommendations for preventing their occurrence.

Position Summary: The Infection Preventionist (Environmental) in this position will be responsible for surveillance and risk education activities for evaluating the healthcare environment; identifying and resolving potential reservoirs or sources of infection specifically around air and water quality at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Will serve as the Clinical Epidemiology liaison to Facilities, Design, and Construction. Perform surveillance; collecting, preparing, analyzing and presenting environmental data and making recommendations for improvement. Monitor staff for compliance with The Department of Clinical Epidemiology policies, the Joint Commission (TJC) standards, federal, state and local regulations, professional guidelines/practice standards and provides coaching when indicated. Serve as a resource to all personnel; providing professional infection prevention education to patients, visitors, staff and groups as needed or requested including but not limited to contractors and other outside vendors. Respond to outbreaks, exposures or influx of infectious patients and taking steps to prevent further spread of disease.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's degree in a health related field required or equivalent education and experience. - Knowledge of principles of epidemiology infection control, infectious diseases and microbiology required. - Experience in hospital infection control preferred specifically around air and water quality preferred. - Certification as infection control practitioner preferred. - Registered nurse preferred. At least two years of clinical experience in a hospital setting preferred. - Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and facilitation skills - Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete projects. Project Management experience preferred - Analytical skills, including an understanding of basic statistics.
