Job Description
The Davis Museum at Wellesley College seeks applications for the Linda Wyatt Gruber '66 Curatorial Fellowship in Photography, an exceptional opportunity for emerging curators in photography, offering an outstanding two-year appointment to a recent PhD in Art History and or an allied field with specialization in the history of photography. The successful appointee will be an active member of the Davis curatorial department, contribute to all related matters of collections assessment, development, and presentation, and provide content expertise and support to courses working with the collection. Working within the Davis's collection, the Gruber Fellow will conceptualize and realize an innovative exhibition in their area of specialization, along with supporting the integration of photography into the permanent galleries. They will guest-teach class visits focused on photography in the Davis's collection and on view in special exhibitions, and support curricular projects engaging with photography at the Davis. As a capstone project, the Gruber Fellow will conceptualize and realize an innovative exhibition in their area of specialization with artworks in the Davis's collection.

The primary responsibilities of the position include all aspects of conceptualizing, planning, and organizing one exhibition and related programming; caring for, researching, and writing about photography in the Davis collections and participating in the acquisitions process; producing gallery didactics and scholarly publications; offering formal lectures and informal gallery talks; participating in events and outreach efforts; and supervising interns and student workers.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Applicants must have received a PhD with a focus on photography within 3 years prior to application deadline.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Important criteria for appointment are evidence of outstanding scholarship and expertise in the history of photography, including its materials and processes, from its early-19th century invention to contemporary explorations; experience in curatorial practice; and a willingness to be a collegial member of the Davis Museum staff and the larger community at Wellesley College.
  • An integral member of the curatorial team, the Gruber Fellow will work closely with staff in all areas of the Davis Museum's operations, and with faculty and students across disciplines. The successful candidate will align closely with the Davis Museum's DEAI values and will possess strong commitments to the unique orientation of the academic museum and to the educational mission of the Davis. The search committee will welcome scholars specializing in all areas of photography and photographic history.
