JOB DESCRIPTION

Wood is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mid-Level Mechanical / Utilities Engineer to join our team in Rockville, MD, to support the EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management) delivery of a sustaining capital program for one of our Biopharmaceutical clients. In this role, you will play a critical part in supporting the ongoing operation and improvement of a biopharmaceutical facility, focusing on mechanical and utilities systems. You will work closely with both internal and external stakeholders to identify and resolve challenges related to these systems and drive the successful implementation of facility enhancement projects.

*This position will be on site at our client's facility

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Systems Analysis and Troubleshooting:
    • Collaborate with client-side engineers responsible for mechanical equipment (e.g., HVAC, piping, pumps, compressors) and utilities systems (e.g., steam, chilled water, compressed air, pure water) to understand and analyze issues within the existing biopharmaceutical facility.
    • Identify root causes of equipment malfunctions, system inefficiencies, and operational problems related to mechanical and utilities systems.
    • Develop and evaluate potential solutions to improve system performance, optimize resource utilization, and enhance overall facility reliability.
  • Project Development and Execution:
    • Provide front-end engineering support for mechanical and utilities-related projects, including developing conceptual designs, conducting feasibility studies, and preparing business cases for project justification.
    • Work closely with both onsite & back of house Wood EPCM team to further develop project designs, ensuring adherence to industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and client specifications.
    • Work with the assigned Wood Project Manager to oversee the implementation of projects from design through construction and commissioning, ensuring timely and budget-conscious execution.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in biopharmaceutical mechanical and utilities engineering, including technologies, regulations, and industry best practices.
    • Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards and procedures within the company related to mechanical and utilities systems.
    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Client Communication and Collaboration:
    • Effectively communicate technical information and project updates to clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and foster collaborative working relationships with all project team members.


QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong emphasis on mechanical systems (HVAC, piping, etc.) and utilities systems (steam, chilled water, compressed air, pure water).
  • Proven experience in working with cross-functional teams, including engineers, scientists, contractors, and clients.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and troubleshoot complex technical issues related to mechanical and utilities systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Plant3D, Desigo, hydraulic and thermal analysis software).
  • Knowledge of relevant industry regulations (e.g., FDA, cGMP, ASME codes).
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
