Position Summary

On behalf of the Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion at Michigan State University, the Outreach and Engagement Manager provides inclusive leadership and expertise in the design, organization, and facilitation of efforts to advance institutional diversity, equity and inclusion strategic priorities through outreach, engagement, and education.

The Outreach and Engagement Manager provides visible leadership on­ and off-campus through active and effective engagement with both internal and external stakeholders, assisting with the coordination and management of efforts aimed at creating a more diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for all students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners. In addition, the manager is responsible for planning, implementation, monitoring and assessment of institutional events and programs advancing MSU's diversity and inclusion priorities.

Independently and/or collaboratively managing various projects, the Outreach and Engagement Manager coordinates campus-wide initiatives and interacts with executive, academic and administrative leaders throughout the university. To advance MSU's diversity, equity and inclusion strategic priorities, in partnership with and in support of executive and administrative leaders, faculty, staff, students and alumni, this position strategically applies project management expertise toward the facilitation of campus-wide cultural and educational efforts designed to advance MSU's status as a national leader in diversity and inclusion.

This is a full-time, campus-based position in East Lansing, MI with some hybrid flexibility. Regular travel is not required.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead production, implementation, and assessment of IDI priority events, outreach initiatives, and community engagement activities.
  • Develop and execute outreach strategies to increase engagement across MSU's diverse community in efforts supporting diversity and inclusion strategic priorities and values.
  • Develops and facilitates learning opportunities that will enhance cultural competency, promote inter and intra-cultural engagement, and support inclusive excellence.
  • Oversees project management planning and implementation processes, including preparation of planning materials, setting action plans, and conducting follow-up in conjunction with committees, partners, and other stakeholders to assess progress and ensure programmatic success.
  • Plans, directs and manages budget processes, personnel activities and other administrative functions including exercising responsibility for the management authorization of expenditures and personnel transactions relating to outreach and engagement activities.
  • Collects and analyses data in order to assess needs, evaluates programs and services, develops tools to measure program efficacy and improve efforts.
  • Prepares reports/articles on the strategies, activities and results of programmatic efforts undertaken.
  • Partners with on-and off-campus stakeholders to effectively facilitate, communicate, and implement outreach and engagement efforts that demonstrate MSU core values, vision, and strategic commitments.
  • Fundraise and generate revenue supporting IDI programs and events.
  • Coordinate logistics and operations for IDI programs, including management of event registration, attendance tracking, and post-event evaluations, coordination of communication strategy with IDI Communications Manager to enhance awareness and engagement in programs, volunteer and committee development, and cultivation of relationships with MSU internal and external partners to engage them in IDI activities.
  • Supervise staff and student employees, including graduate assistants, interns, and externs in their academic progress and professional service to Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Provide other services and perform additional, related duties as assigned, including but not limited to those normally associated with executive management and administrative positions in a higher education community.
  • Minimum Requirements
    • Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent knowledge, acquired through experience performing work similar to the duties of this position.
    • Five or more years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in providing strategic leadership and oversight of outreach and engagement related activities across a large, dynamic organization.
    • Three or more years of experience leading and supervising institutional outreach and engagement strategy, planning, administration, development, and assessment.
    • Expert knowledge and experience utilizing qualitative and quantitative data, necessary to continuous improvement of outreach and engagement process/practice improvement.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion within an organization, team, and/or campus environment.
    • Demonstrated experience providing excellent communication within a diverse organization and/or community, for leaders, partners, constituents, and other audiences with varied educational and/or experiential backgrounds.
    • Three or more years of demonstrated successful experience supervising and developing staff.
    Desired Qualifications
    • Advanced educational attainment. (i.e., master/terminal/doctoral degree and/or specialized training or certification).
    • Seven or more years of demonstrated success leading large organizational outreach and engagement efforts with measurable community impact and continuous quality improvement.
    • Five or more years of demonstrated expertise developing, planning, administering, and assessing diversity and inclusion outreach and engagement.
    • Progressive professional experience in higher education with an understanding of community member and stakeholder needs, expectations, and cultural context.
    • Demonstrated experience engaging with persons of diverse identities, statuses, and/or cultural affiliations with effective conflict resolution, inter-group dialogue, and cross-cultural communication skills.
    • Deep understanding of, passion for, and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
    • Capability to lead with both a decisive and consultative style, being well-organized and self-directed, exhibiting a high level of integrity that engenders trust and confidence.
    • Ability to foster open communication and proactively build positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders, exceptionally representing MSU and the Spartan community.
