Description

The Social Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for a part-time Lecturer to propose and teach one course on behalf of the Chicago Studies program. Chicago Studies supports academically rich collaborations between instructors, students, and external partners to leverage Chicago as an illuminating locus for study. In so doing, it distinguishes the College as a premiere space for place-based, interdisciplinary urban studies nationwide. This course, which will be offered in the Spring 2025 term, is intended to bridge Chicago Studies' offerings with those of the Parrhesia Program, which promotes dialogue, freedom of expression, and civic discourse. We are particularly interested in classes that can engage students in critical reflection on the ways in which Chicago's South and West Side communities are represented (especially in regional/national and partisan political conversations), and then teach them to research and construct well-sourced narratives about these communities and the issues that concern them. The course design should utilize experiential learning (e.g. city-wide excursions, Chicago guest speakers, and other forms of community engagement/research) to enrich class readings and assignments.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a terminal degree (or equivalent professional experience) in an area relevant to the proposed course topics and experience teaching at the college level. Professional experience in Chicago journalism and/or non-fiction reportage is strongly preferred.

Application Instructions

To be considered for the position you must submit your application through the University of Chicago Academic Job Opportunities site here: http://apply.interfolio.com/158989 and upload (1) a cover letter/letter of intent, (2) a current CV, (3) a brief course proposal or draft syllabus for the class they would hope to teach on behalf of Chicago Studies, (4) a teaching statement, and (5) additional evidence of pedagogical accomplishment and promise: such as a teaching portfolio, recent course evaluations, third-party observations of the applicant's teaching if available, or other relevant assessments. Review of applications will begin on December 13, 2024, and continue until the position is filled or the search is closed.
