Location

Located at 2014 Washington Street, in Newton, the Newton-Wellesley Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a medically approved exercise and education program to help people regain strength, endurance, and confidence after a heart attack, heart surgery, or other heart-related condition. We are certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), a measure of excellence and quality.

Schedule

We are seeking a Per Diem Behavioral Health Educator to pick up a minimum of 2 shifts a month. This Behavioral Health Educator serves as a class instructor and counselor for adult patients in the ambulatory setting of Cardiac Rehabilitation. Due to the class schedule, hours will vary, but we can work with the candidate's availability! Our office is open 8:00am-6:00pm Monday through Thursday and there is potential for some remote work, based on performance and program needs.

Role Overview

This is a unique opportunity including both direct care and assisting in the care of psychosocial and overall mental health services for patients currently enrolled in Cardiac Rehabilitation. If you are passionate about mental health conditions and psychosocial issues this is the position for you!

Responsibilities Include:

  • Teach and develop classes, in particular, classes in the Resilience series, which cover behavior change, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), goal setting, stress management, and mindfulness. There is opportunity to develop additional material for cardiac patients, e.g., the psychiatric sequelae of cardiovascular disease, chronic illness, and cardiac procedures.
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments of cardiac rehab patients. Provide short-term 1:1 counseling, either in person or virtually, for individual patients who are referred by the Cardiac Rehab team.
  • Teach and support Cardiac Rehab staff members about mental health issues, including but not limited to: assessment of suicidality, the psychiatric sequalae of cardiac surgery and cardiovascular disease, and the impact of critical illness on the family system.
  • Spend time counseling and providing support to cardiac rehab patients during their cardiac rehab appointments.
  • Provide community resources for cardiac rehab patients and their families and make referrals to appropriate agencies: e.g., psychotherapy resources; senior centers, mindfulness courses, substance abuse resources, and other agencies that provide support for the patient's disabilities and comorbidities. Collaborate with Community Wellness Coordinator as well.
  • Develop and facilitate a Newcomer's Group for cardiac rehab patients. The purpose of the Newcomer's Group is to introduce patients to the concept of group support.


Qualifications
Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Social Work or Master's Degree in other directly related Human Services discipline.

• Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) preferred.

• Active license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

• 3-5 years of post-graduate experience working in mental health.
