POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Regional Director of Pharmacy Services, the Pharmacy Operations Manager is responsible for the direction and oversight of all distributive pharmacy services, pharmacy operations and automation at the Capital Region Medical Center. The Pharmacy Operations Manager is a key member of the pharmacy leadership team providing expertise in automation and operations workflows. In collaboration with the Regional Director of Pharmacy, Pharmacy Clinical Manager, Pharmacy Compliance Coordinator and Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, this individual will ensure effective and efficient pharmacy operations for the medical center.

Core responsibilities include implementing and optimizing pharmacy operations workflows while designing, implementing and optimizing the application of pharmacy automation. They are accountable for improving pharmacy operational performance metrics aimed at promoting high quality patient outcomes. Responsible for working directly with the Pharmacy Clinical Manager to grow decentralized pharmacy services and develop new/innovative pharmacist and pharmacy technician distributive roles. Responsible for direct oversight of all pharmacy purchasing including cost effective, fiscally responsible, compliant purchasing while assisting in the management of drug shortages. Supports and participates in numerous committees including Medication Management, Pharmacy and Therapeutics and other key clinical committees. Reviews and responds to medication event reports entered in the hospital event reporting system in collaboration with the Pharmacy Clinical Manager. Leads and work collaboratively to craft and implement quality/performance improvement initiatives to correct issues accordingly. The Operations Manager develops, implements and maintains policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols to ensure compliant medication management in line with applicable federal, state, Joint Commission and CMS regulations.

Principal Duties:

Manages operational and distributive pharmacists, the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, pharmacy automation and pharmacy purchasing staff. This is inclusive of performance evaluations; disciplinary matters; staffing plans and scheduling; payroll; training/development and recruiting. Establishes, coordinates, implements and optimizes all aspects of acute care pharmacy operations, distribution and automation to ensure high quality, cost-effective, patient-centered pharmacy services. Must be highly skilled in pharmacy automation and implementing pharmacy automation to optimize workflows including EPIC, Pyxis, Swisslog, pharmacy inventory management system (boxpicker), high-speed medication re-packagers and emergency medication/code cart automated system.

Designs, implements and optimizes pharmacy and automation workflows which lead to efficient, time sensitive, high-reliability medication distribution to patients. Ensures operations are in ongoing compliance with USP 797/USP 800, The Joint Commission, CMS and other relevant regulatory body requirements. Establish, implement and maintain Pharmacy policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory standards.

Complete understanding of all pharmacy purchasing operations to be able to cover/staff as back-up pharmacy purchaser and place medication and-non medication related requisitions as needed. Serve as front-line leader within pharmacy with a staffing component to remain directly engaged with pharmacy team, pharmacy operations and direct resolution of issues. Review and respond to operational/distributive medication events, near-misses via the hospital event reporting system while leading multi-disciplinary quality/performance improvement teams to correct issues accordingly.

Ensure pharmacy staff members maintain compliance with annual sterile compounding requirements including written testing, media fills and gloved fingertip completion.

In collaboration with other pharmacy leadership team members, determine annual operational, clinical, purchasing and compliance metrics and manage to successful outcomes. Assists the Regional Director of Pharmacy Director in developing operational systems and procedures in preparation for regulatory surveys.

Serve as a pharmacy representative on committees focused on the medication use process and medication safety. Ability to serve as preceptor/resource for PGY1 pharmacy residents on pharmacy administrative, medication management, patient safety rotations.

16. Assists the Regional Director of Pharmacy by collaborating with the Pharmacy Clinical Manager to review, tracking and compilation of data regarding adverse drug events (i.e., medication incidents and adverse drug reactions) and operational metrics.

Attends conferences, seminars, and meetings as required. Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications
Licensure/Certification/Registration
  • Required: Current Maryland license in good standing as a Pharmacist
  • Preferred: MBA, MHA, M.S, MPH or equivalent; PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency
  • Other: Lean/Six Sigma; Project Management skills
Education/Knowledge
  • Attained Level: Advance Professional Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree
  • Preferred: MBA, MHA, M.S, MPH or equivalent; PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency
  • Completed Course Work/Program: PharmD Degree from an ACPE accredited program required
Applicable Experience
  • Required: 5 years in Acute Care Pharmacy
  • Preferred: 5 or more years in Acute Care/Health-System Pharmacy
Experience (describe required & preferred): Requires 5 years recent operations management experience in a progressive hospital pharmacy/health system. Significant experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements.

Problems and situations may cross departmental/divisional lines.
