The Phlebotomist is responsible for a wide variety of specimen collection, processing, and transport of blood and other specimens that are to be tested at Shepherd Center or referred to an outside laboratory. This hands-on role's Accountabilities are significant in supporting clinical departments throughout the Center in an effort to provide the best patient care.

The Phlebotomist collects, labels, and processes patient specimens for the Center.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains familiarity with the use of hospital information systems and other computer applications that are required to manage information and workflow.
  • Documents and acts on specimens with incoming defects promptly (wrong specimen, inadequate specimen, improper ID etc.); is able to identify, evaluate and remediate common pre-analytic specimen errors.
  • Monitors pending orders frequently, investigates and takes appropriate action in the event of delay in collection; communicates testing delays to patient care and/or laboratory staff as appropriate.
  • Processes referral testing, including batching, labeling and packaging of specimens to be referred to Mayo Medical Lab; creates requisitions and promptly transports specimens to Piedmont Hospital for testing.
  • Maintains adequate supplies for specimen collection and referral testing and alerts supervisor of low inventory or supplies approaching expiration.
  • Possesses a high degree of skill performing venipunctures, even on difficult patients.
  • Exhibits high standards of professionalism and customer service when dealing with patients, visitors and staff, treating them with dignity, courtesy, respect and empathy in all circumstances.
  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process.
REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent


REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATION:
  • Phlebotomy Certification
REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
  • 1-3 years of related experience required
REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS:
  • Possesses a high degree of skill performing venipunctures, even on difficult patients.
  • Completes orientation and initial assessment of competency successfully by determined due date.
  • Completes mandatory education and annual competency assessment requirements by determined due date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Organizational ability, and evidence of strong decision making
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
  • Uses body, tools, or special devices to safely, effectively, and efficiently to move, guide, or place patients. Involves some latitude for judgement with regard to precision attained and the selection of what adaptive device(s) to utilize.
  • Ability to transfer and position patients, consistent with lifting up to 15 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Some potential for exposure to blood and body fluids.
