A DAY IN THE LIFE

Our Hydrogeologist/Hydrogeological Engineer position is located in our Charlottesville, VA office with remote/hybrid options.

As a key member of the Montrose Environmental Solutions team, this role will be responsible for a full range of activities including:

  • Provide technical support for a wide range of hydrogeology projects including regional and local hydrogeologic assessments, contaminated site assessments, regulatory groundwater monitoring programs, and conceptual site model development.
  • Work with project teams to conceptualize, build, calibrate, and execute a variety of groundwater flow models using industry accepted software (Groundwater VISTAS, FEFLOW, Visual MODFLOW, GMS)
  • Support the development and execution of conceptual site model (CSM)-driven work plans that balance the application of innovative modeling tools or approaches, with the scale and scope of the problem
  • Prepare a variety of technical reports including analyzing, interpreting results and reporting project data
  • Liaise with clients and stakeholders
  • Apply your skills in quantitative hydrogeology, geospatial analysis, and data visualization to accelerate project progress and activate key decisions.
YOUR EXPERTISE AND SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in geology, hydrogeology, environmental engineering, or a related field
  • Eligible for professional registration (i.e. PG, PE)
  • 4+ years of experience in a similar role within a consulting environment
  • Practical experience in physical and contaminant hydrogeology including conceptual site model development, groundwater monitoring well network design, groundwater pumping tests (design, implementation, and interpretation), groundwater-surface water interaction, dewatering assessments, drilling and aquifer testing programs, feasibility studies, brownfields projects, risk assessment, and risk management.
  • Working knowledge of industry-standard groundwater modeling and analysis software packages such as AQTESOLV, Surfer, Groundwater VISTAS, FEFLOW, Visual MODFLOW, and GMS.
  • Specific experience using FEFLOW considered a plus.
  • Specific experience with automated parameter estimation/calibration tools (PEST) considered a plus.
  • Conduct contaminant transport modeling using MT3D, RT3D, PHT3D
  • Working knowledge of industry-standard GIS software packages (ArcPro, QGIS) and software for developing boring logs and cross sections (gINT, OpenGround).
  • Experience with subsurface hydrogeochemical 3D visualization modeling software (Leapfrog, EVS, Rockworks)
  • Comfort with MS Excel pivot tables, MS Access and basic understanding of database management, query writing, data reduction and tabulation.
  • Experience applying scripting/automation to geospatial analyses/geoprocessing considered a plus (Python).
  • Excellent problem-solving ability and effective project management
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a collaborative attitude
  • Communicating complex site processes and plans both verbally and through elegant technical graphics to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Experience writing technical reports
  • Ability to travel (< 15%)
