Job Summary
This position's primary function is to serves as production liaison for assigned journals published by the Press. Primary responsibility is coordination of all phases of the production process, including but not limited to developing and maintaining publication schedules, corresponding with and reviewing work of authors and freelance copyeditors, and monitoring performance of each production stage. Some travel possible
Duties & Responsibilities
- 1. Serves as the primary contact for their assigned journals with journal academic editors, authors, and copyeditors and is in daily contact with other Journals Publications Editors, the Journals Manager, and other journals and production staff.
- 2. Responsible for employing the Press's cleanup software to prepare files for use by freelance copyeditors and in-house production staff and for creating and entering records in the Press's publication management software to track all details of each journal issue.
- 3. Monitors schedules and reviews later production stages such as revised pages, page proofs, XML ,etc.
- 4. Responsible for receiving, reviewing, and filing all permissions correspondence for each journal issue as it arrives, and for advising authors and/or editors on preparing or obtaining music, graphics, illustrations, or other non-text materials for inclusion in issues or on covers.
- 5. Works closely with the Journals Manager on building or strengthening relationships with academic editors and affiliated professional associations and with Journals marketing staff to insure that information about journals on UI Press's website is always up to date.
- 6. Copyedits electronic files as needed.
- 7. Other duties as assigned appropriate for a Publications Editor.
Minimum QualificationsAny one or any combination of the following, totaling four (4) years (48 months), from the categories below: credit for college-level training in any field 30 semester hours equals 1 year (12 months) 60 semester hours equals 2 years (24 months) 90 semester hours equals 3 years (36 months) 120 semester hours or or higher equals 4 years (48 months) Or professional experience in editing and producing publications Two (2) years (24 months) of progressively more advanced/responsible professional experience in editing and producing publications
Preferred QualificationsPreferred Education
1. Bachelor's degree in English, History, Journalism, Communications, or related field.
Preferred Experience
1. At least two years of progressively more advanced/ responsible professional experience in editing and producing publications with a minimum of one year full time equivalent experience in copyediting and related editorial work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- 1. Sharp proofreading skills and the ability to write clearly for a variety of audiences.
- 2. Must be detail oriented and able to multitask.
- 3. Must demonstrate ability to copyedit according to Press style and to work with electronic content.
- 4. Must be able to work independently, as well as within a team environment.
- 5. Strong interpersonal communication, organizational, networking, and follow-through skills.
- 6. Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize, and work under pressure on multiple projects.
- 7. Proficiency in word processing software, database use, internet research, and Microsoft computer applications.
- 8. Knowledge with Journals print and/or electronic publishing.
- 9. Knowledge with rendering graphics for web presentation and Adobe Photoshop.
- 10. Knowledge working with BiblioSuite content management software.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1256 - Publications Editor position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. Salary range is $45,000-50,000, salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the full range for a position.
