Job Summary:

The University of Texas at Arlington Research Institute (UTARI) is seeking a full-time Research Scientist to join the Automation & Intelligent Systems Division. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and development projects in robotics, computer vision, machine learning, and control systems. Key responsibilities include designing, developing, and testing new technologies, leading and supporting grant opportunities, fostering collaborations, and directing teams of students and junior researchers. Additionally, the Research Scientist will contribute to patentable ideas and manage a dynamic mix of lab work and project management tasks. We are looking for a dedicated professional ready to make significant contributions to our innovative research initiatives and help shape the future of technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This position is open to candidates with varying levels of expertise. We will consider candidates at different levels of experience and expertise, but they must meet one of the qualifications below to be considered. Candidates should clearly indicate which position they are applying for.

Research Scientist II

Full-time research position assisting with research and development projects that include design and execution as well as supporting new grant/contract opportunities. Role may include assisting in establishing and developing collaborative partnerships, contributing to defining the research scope of the Division, providing some project management, and contributing to patentable ideas and patent applications. Majority of activities will involve lab work (experimental and theoretical). Job duties will be performed under some direct supervision. May supervise students.

Research Scientist III or Senior Research Scientist

Full-time research position assisting with research and development projects that include design and execution as well as supporting new grant/contract opportunities. Role may include contributing to defining the research scope of the Division, leading projects, managing portions of budgets, and contributing to patentable ideas and patent applications. Activities are typically a combination of lab work (experimental and theoretical) and project management. Perform job duties under some direct supervision. Will supervise staff and students.

Minimum Qualifications:

Research Scientist II:

  • Bachelors of Science in relevant engineering or science discipline with four (4) years of relevant experience.

Research Scientist III:
  • Bachelors of Science in relevant engineering or science discipline with eight (8) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in seeking external funding and grant writing.
  • Notable publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Proven leadership and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Senior Research Scientist:
  • Bachelors of Science in relevant engineering or science discipline plus 12 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven track record of securing research funding and grants.
  • Extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Proven leadership and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:

Research Scientist II:

  • Masters of Science in relevant engineering or science discipline with two (2) years of relevant experience, or PhD in relevant engineering or science discipline.

Research Scientist III:
  • Master of Science in relevant engineering or science discipline with five (5) years of relevant experience, or PhD in relevant engineering or science discipline with two (2) years of relevant experience.

Senior Research Scientist:
  • Master of Science in relevant engineering or science discipline with eight (8) years of relevant experience, or PhD in relevant engineering or science discipline with five (5) years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications for All Levels Research Scientist:
  • Familiar with C/C++, Python, MATLAB, OpenCV, supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning, Torch, Tensorflow, GPU programming, ROS.
  • Experience in proposal writing.
