The College of Natural Science (NatSci) invites applications for a twelve-month Research Specialist (Continuing System) position for an Assistant Director of CAM. This is an external search, although internal candidates are welcome and encouraged to apply. The candidate is expected to have strong management skills and experience, effective interpersonal skills, and a commitment to customer service. The candidate should be broadly knowledgeable in light and electron microscopy, but their specific areas of expertise in microscopy and image analysis are not critical. The candidate should have some experience educating, training and or assisting users with instrument method development. The candidate should be motivated, have excellent organizational skills, experimental problem-solving skills, the ability to work well with people and be willing to learn new technologies while supporting core microscopy operations.
This position will report to the Director of CAM. The selected candidate will join a team of diverse and committed professionals who work collaboratively to support faculty, postdoctoral and graduate student researchers across campus.
CAM contains several state-of-the-art microscope and imaging systems, including two scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, two transmission electron microscopes (TEM) configured for soft and hard material characterization, confocal laser scanning microscopes (CLSM), a laser capture microscope (LCM), and a scanning digital optical microscope.
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
Work closely with the CAM Director and Staff to manage the core microscopes and imaging systems and coordinate the day-to-day operations at an MSU core facility with over 400 users per year.
Assist the Director with the preparation of the Annual Evaluation Report for CAM Staff.
Contribute and support research efforts requiring microscope and imaging systems
Support teaching courses offered by the CAM, assign instructors, and prepare the annual Teaching Percentage Funding Request for CAM.
Maintain the CAM web page and serve as the primary contact for MSU and off-campus users.
Manage lab security, including ensuring data management security as per MSU requirements.
Be responsible for overseeing the overall CAM budget with the CAM Director.
Arrange CAM Staff meetings and attend Chairs/Directors meeting with the CAM Director.
Serve as co-Chair of the new CAM Advisory Committee.

Required DegreeDoctorate -STEM related
Minimum RequirementsDoctorate degree in STEM (engineering, medical, biological, or physical sciences).
Strong organization, interpersonal and communication skills.
Excellent experimental problem-solving skills.
Interest in learning new technologies.
A minimum of five years of demonstrated experience in microscopy.
Experience managing a team of individuals.
Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging in a professional or educational setting.
Desired QualificationsBroad experience and expertise in light and electron microscopy and imaging techniques.
Some experience educating, training, and assisting with microscopy and imaging method development.
Experience developing and delivering effective presentations and written reports/documents.
