The department of Risk Management has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Sr. Manager, Risk Management to work onsite at the UHealth campus. The Sr. Manager, Risk Management implements and supervises the activities of risk management programs. Additionally, this employee monitors and coordinates risk control, reduction, and prevention programs. Moreover, the incumbent strives to minimize the risk of injuries and adverse events to patients.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Investigates and analyzes the frequency and cause of patient injuries.

  • Directs the coordination and maintenance of the event reporting system (ERS), including systematic reviews of all event reports filed at the facility, to identify trends or patterns, and develop recommendations for appropriate corrective actions.

  • Provides and directs basic and complex preventive risk management assessment(s) of processes, procedures, and programs.

  • Maintains sufficient knowledge of JCAHO, federal, and state regulations, and PRO activities to ensure hospital and medical staff activities comply with regulations.

  • Develops and modifies policies to comply with safety legislation, JCAHO, HIPAA, and industry practices.

  • Coordinates and develops hospital-wide programs for environment patient care and risk-free services.

  • Liaises with attorneys, insurance companies, and individuals, and investigates any incidences that may result in an asset loss.

  • Works closely with corporate and defense counsel, directors, corporate associates, and medical and allied health staff on risk management issues and concerns.

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive risk management education and orientation program.

  • Conducts root cause analyses in response to unexpected occurrences.

  • Tracks and analyzes data for trending and develops appropriate action plans and risk modification strategies.

  • Analyzes hospital acquired conditions and determines corrective action plans.

  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with university policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on university policy and procedures.

Department Specific Functions

  • Provide notification and documentation of potentially compensable events to Medical/Healthcare Risk Management Director (Executive Director), and Chief Medical Risk Officer.

  • Act as the hospital's Environment of Care/Facilities Senior Risk Manager overseeing the environment of care services, facilities, as well as security and patient safety events.

  • Reporting to the Medical/Healthcare Risk Management Director (Executive Director), Environment of Care/Facilities Senior Risk Manager will support the daily operations of the hospital's environmental compliance programs.

  • Environment of Care/Facilities Senior Risk Manager will work directly with Safety Officers and Materials Management teams, assists in hazardous material response, conducts workplace hazard assessments, addresses environmental hazards, performs routine indoor air environment analysis, performs noise surveys, and ensures overall construction safety.

  • The Environment of Care and Hospital Senior Risk Manager will work with the operations staff, risk management, environmental services, plant maintenance and senior hospital leaders to align department goals with the mission while keeping the patient's safety in mind.

  • Facilitate resolution of event reports, complaints/grievances pertaining to environment-of-care issues.

  • Facilitate interventions as necessary with Patient Relations, Hospital Staff, Physicians, Department Leaders, Medical/Healthcare Risk Management Director (Executive Director), and Chief Medical Risk Officer.

  • Review, analyze and identify AHCA, DOH and other regulatory agency reportable events and prepare submission for approval by Medical/Healthcare Risk Management Director (Executive Director), and Chief Medical Risk Officer.

  • Provides interpretation of risk management and patient safety standards and procedures to medical and hospital staff; counsels' staff and physicians in sensitive situations involving actual or potential claims

  • Analyze and trend data as captured through the event reporting system to identify trends of areas of high risk.

  • Develop summary reports of trending analysis and submit to appropriate committees.

  • Review, revise and develop policies and procedures in association with the Medical/Healthcare Risk Management Director (Executive Director) and/or Associate Medical Risk Officer pertaining to or having a bearing on risk management and patient safety in accordance with regulatory requirements.

  • Conduct additional investigation and assist with discovery requests as directed by Medical/Healthcare Risk Management Director (Executive Director), Chief Medical Risk Officer, Director of Medical Claims and Assistant General Counsel.

  • Participating in Environmental Rounds, and attends Environment of Care, Workplace Safety, Risk Management meetings, and work groups and/or process improvement teams that improve patient/customer satisfaction.

  • Participate on Patient Safety Committee: collaborate with team and finalize agenda for meeting.

  • Identify educational needs and develop and present Risk Management and Event Reporting education to staff, faculty and community physicians.

  • Collaborate with team, and assesses, monitors, and recommends, and prepares annual patient safety Evaluation.

  • Develop and present Risk Management Program summary reports as required.

  • Plan, Develop and maintain structure for AAAHC, AHCA and CMS Survey readiness preparation.

  • Provides oversight of environment activities and performance improvement activities. Establish key Performance measures.

  • Provides oversight of regulatory activities. Provides ongoing update on regulatory changes and update policy and procedure.

  • Attend national and local conferences to keep abreast of national trends in determining institutional priorities.

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate of Applied Science's Degree in relevant field.

  • Healthcare Risk Manager Certification by an accredited Institution.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

  • Experience in enterprise-wide approach to risk to look beyond clinical hazards, minimizing dangers in hazardous materials and waste, security, medical equipment or utilities, the physical environment and operating a safe facility preferred.

  • Experience in managing activities in the physical environment, collecting deficiency information, and disseminating summaries of actions and results preferred.

  • Experience in the Joint Commission Environment of Care chapter, to include safety, security, hazardous material and waste, fire safety, medical equipment management and utility systems management. Experience in regulation requirements, operate efficiently and approach zero harm preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e., Microsoft Office).
