Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) Research Specialist

Posting Summary
Serve as an Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) Specialist in the University of Vermont Spatial Analysis Laboratory. Design and implement UAS data collection, processing, and analytical solutions for a broad range of research objectives. Create specialized UAS training materials and administer specialized UAS educational activities. Coordinate and manage UAS project proposals, execution, and deliverables. Design and develop technical solutions using complex and highly specialized equipment to solve challenges surrounding integrating UAS into the National Airspace System.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
• Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.
• Two years of demonstrated experience as Pilot-In-Command operating Group 1 (0-20lbs GTOW) and Group 2 (20-55 lbs. GTOW) UAS. Specific experience operating fixed-wing, multirotor, and VTOL sUAS required.
• FAA 14 CFR Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification with valid sUAS rating.
• Three or more years of geospatial experience, including university-level coursework.
• Demonstrated experience operating highly technical UAS sensors (electro-optical (RGB), multispectral, thermal, and LiDAR). Experience with independently developing mission profiles and data processing workflows to meet research objectives, including flight planning, data capture, complex data processing workflows, QA/QC, and data dissemination.
• Adept in the use and instruction of a variety of UAS flight control software, UAS data processing software, and geospatial software packages. Experience generating and manipulating vector, raster, point cloud, and mesh datasets.
• Skilled knowledge of principles, practices, terminology, and trends in UAS and geospatial technology.
• Demonstrated experience with curriculum development and course instruction of sUAS flight operations and data processing.
• Experience and skilled knowledge of UAS for disaster response and understanding of the FEMA Incident Command System.
• FEMA IS-00100.c, IS-00200.c, IS-00700.b, and IS-00800.d certifications or the ability to obtain.
• Valid driver's license and UVM Authorized Driver certification or ability to obtain.
• CPR, First Aid, and/or Wilderness First Aid/Responder certification(s) or the ability to obtain.

Bargaining unit position, External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period, Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime), A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees, Travel to and from worksites required, This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy, Background Check required for this position
