The Voice Biomechanics and Acoustics Lab led by Dr. Eric Hunter, affiliated with the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Clinic and housed in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa, is seeking a full-time, research-focused speech-language pathologist. The ideal candidate will have experience in voice disorders, as well as upper airway and swallowing disorders. This position is currently planned to be 100% research-focused, but there may be opportunities for teaching and direct clinical service based on the candidate's strengths.

This is a specified term position for one year with the possibility of extension based on grant funding and research needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary liaison, facilitating communication among the voice research team.
  • Collaborate to develop and adhere to project milestones for research initiatives.
  • Administer voice and speech research protocols to participants.
  • Accurately record, consolidate, and disseminate test results.
  • Assist in growing the voice client base for both clinical and research endeavors.

Opportunities and Support
  • Present research at local and national conferences.
  • Potential teaching and direct clinical service opportunities, which could contribute to a clinical fellowship towards CCC-SLP.
  • Potential preparation for or transition towards a doctoral program.

About Dr. Hunter's Research Group: Dr. Hunter's research group is highly active, comprising research scientists, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and students at various levels, as well as collaborators from institutions across the country and internationally. The lab is committed to mentoring and training new members, offering opportunities to develop a lab-related clinical practice or pursue an independent research program with external funding tailored to the candidate's expertise and interests.

Education Required
  • Master's degree in speech pathology or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications
  • Speech-Language Pathologist with Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), or plan for obtaining CCC-SLP in the very near future (e.g. a few months or a CF).
  • Some clinical and/or research experience in diagnosing and treating voice, upper airway, and swallowing disorders in adult populations.
  • Proven capability for problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Ability to assist with research recruitment to expand clinical awareness and support for populations with voice disorders (e.g., hyperfunction, muscle tension, nodules, fatigue).
  • Exceptional professional communication skills in working with the public for research participant recruitment and outreach.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians.
  • Experience in scientific writing (e.g. presentations, thesis/capstone, peer-reviewed papers).
  • Experience with voice assessment.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and related software.
  • Must have flexible schedule. To accommodate participants' schedules, the research assistant must have weekend and evening availability (this time is scheduled in advance with the research assistant's input and stays relatively consistent throughout the study).
  • Must demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy and strong organizational skills.

Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience in both clinical and research environments.
  • Experience in human subject research, clinical research coordination and recruitment, and IRB application preparation and management.
  • Knowledge and experience with occupational or professional voice users (i.e., individuals who use their voice as a tool of their trade such as teachers, broadcasters, call center workers, singers).
  • Knowledge and proficiency in statistical design and analysis.
  • Strive to promote continual process and quality improvement.
  • Exceptional professional communication skills in working with the public for research participant recruitment and outreach.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians.
  • Bilingual skills (any language).
  • Some clinical and/or research experience in diagnosing and treating voice, upper airway, and swallowing disorders in adult populations.
